Kentucky ended their regular season with a 4-6 record in the SEC which was good for fourth in the SEC East with wins against Tennessee (3-7), Mississippi State (3-7), South Carolina (2-8), and Vanderbilt (0-9). The Cats started the season ranked inside the Top 25, but quickly fell out after a week one loss to Auburn and never returned after a 2-2 start in 2020. Kentucky dropped four of their last six to land in the Gator Bowl.
Meanwhile, NC State finished with an impressive 8-3 record with victories over Wake Forest (4-4), Pitt (6-5), Virginia (5-5), Duke (2-9), Florida State (3-6), Liberty (9-1), Syracuse (1-10), and Georgia Tech (3-7) which is good for fifth in the ACC.
The Wolfpack began their season winning four of their first five which put them inside the Top 25. However, they would lose their next two games against North Carolina and Miami to drop out of the poll. They finished their season on a four-game win streak to put them back at 23rd in the final CFP rankings.
Kentucky and NC State have only squared off twice in history with both teams claiming a victory. The last meeting came in 1970 in a game that saw the Cats walk away with a 27-2 victory.
This will be Kentucky’s second time playing in the Gator Bowl, the first time coming in the 2016-17 season that saw Stephen Johnson and co. lose to Georgia Tech 33-18.
The game on January 2nd will kick off at Noon on ESPN.
Go Cats. Beat the Wolfpack.
